LESSON 4 · Reactions All Around You

Order from Chaos

Crystallization is the process by which atoms, molecules, or ions arrange themselves into a highly organized, repeating three-dimensional structure called a crystal lattice.

The driving force is energy minimization. Atoms in a crystal lattice sit at the lowest possible energy state, locked into fixed positions. This orderly arrangement is why crystals have flat faces, sharp edges, and predictable geometric shapes.
