Carbon Bonding Versatility
Carbon can form single, double, and triple bonds with itself and other atoms, building an enormous variety of molecular shapes. Single bonds rotate freely, giving molecules flexibility. Double and triple bonds lock atoms in place, creating rigid structures.
Take two simple molecules: in ethane (C2H6), a single bond lets the two carbons twist past each other; in ethyne (C2H2), a triple bond pulls them tight and dead straight. Same two atoms, completely different shape and behavior. No other element can build such stable, diverse, and complex structures at the temperatures and pressures found on Earth's surface — which is why carbon dominates biology.
