LESSON 3 · The Molecules of Life

The Code Is Chemical

DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) is a polymer — a long chain of repeating units called nucleotides.

The bases pair through hydrogen bonds: A always pairs with T (two hydrogen bonds), and G always pairs with C (three hydrogen bonds). This complementary base pairing is why DNA can copy itself. Unzip the double helix and each strand serves as a template for building its partner.
