Mutations: Chemistry Gone Wrong
A mutation is a chemical change in DNA — a base gets swapped, deleted, or inserted during replication. Most mutations are neutral or harmful.

Mutations happen because DNA replication is not perfect. Your cells copy 3 billion base pairs with an error rate of about one per billion bases — remarkably accurate but not flawless. UV radiation, certain chemicals, and free radicals can also damage DNA bases directly.
