CO2 in the air
Most of a tree's dry weight is carbon pulled from carbon dioxide gas through its leaves; the soil mainly supplies water and minerals. Back in the 1600s, Jan Baptist van Helmont grew a willow in a weighed pot for five years and found the tree gained far more mass than the soil lost — the first clue that the soil was not the source.
