Egyptians used willow bark for pain around 1500 BC. The active compound (salicylic acid) wasn't isolated until the early 1800s, and Bayer began selling aspirin in 1899. Yet no one explained exactly how it works until 1971 — more than 70 years after it reached pharmacies.
