A self-healing invisible layer of chromium oxide just atoms thick
Adding at least 10.5% chromium to steel creates a nano-thin oxide layer that blocks oxygen. Scratch it and the layer regrows almost instantly. This was discovered by accident in 1913 by Harry Brearley while he was testing gun-barrel alloys.
