The future of polymers depends on solving the waste problem:

  • Chemical recycling breaks polymers back into monomers for reuse, unlike mechanical recycling which degrades quality
  • Bio-based plastics from corn starch or sugarcane reduce fossil fuel dependence

The real solution likely combines better material design with improved waste infrastructure. Making plastics that are easy to recycle is as important as building systems to actually collect and process them.
