Look at what seems random — stock prices, weather, shuffled cards — and mathematics often finds a pattern buried inside. Pattern recognition is humanity's oldest mathematical skill, predating written numbers by thousands of years and driving every early civilization's science.

Ancient Babylonians noticed that solar eclipses repeat in cycles of about 18 years (the Saros cycle). They couldn't explain why, but the pattern let them predict eclipses. Finding the pattern came first; understanding it came centuries later.
