Patterns Scale to Machines
Pattern recognition used to be a human-only skill. Not anymore. Machine learning is pattern-finding at industrial scale: a language model reads trillions of words and learns which sequences repeat, which co-occur, and which signal a question. The core operation is mathematical — compress the data until only the patterns remain.
The same idea powers spam filters, search ranking, and the recommendations that guess your next song. Software now reads petabytes per second. But humans still beat machines at noticing which patterns matter — judgment that no training set fully teaches.
