How Many Ways?

A combination counts how many ways you can choose items from a group when order does not matter. Picking 3 pizza toppings from 10 options gives you 120 possible pizzas. The formula — "n choose k" — is one of the most useful in all of mathematics.

Combinations differ from permutations in one critical way: order. Choosing pepperoni, mushrooms, and olives is the same combination regardless of the sequence. A permutation would count each ordering separately, inflating the total by k factorial.

The combination formula appears in genetics, cryptography, and statistics. It is the counting backbone of probability theory.
