A handshake is a combination: order doesn't matter, since you shaking my hand is the same handshake as me shaking yours. So you count C(10,2) = (10 × 9) / 2 = 45 pairs. The same 'choose 2' formula counts the number of unique matchups in a round-robin tournament or the edges in a fully connected network.
