LESSON 2 · Probability & Luck
Mild vs. Wild
Nassim Taleb distinguishes Mediocristan from Extremistan. In Mediocristan, randomness is mild — heights, IQ scores, coin flips cluster around an average, and extreme outliers barely move the needle. The tallest person in a room barely shifts the group's average height.
In Extremistan, a single outlier dominates everything. One bestselling book outsells the next thousand combined. One billionaire's wealth dwarfs an entire city's. These variables follow power-law distributions, where extreme events are far more common than a bell curve predicts. Vilfredo Pareto first documented this in 1896 studying Italian land ownership.
