Eratosthenes measured shadow angles in two cities 800 km apart and used proportional geometry
In 240 BC, he noticed the Sun cast no shadow in Syene at noon but cast a 7.2-degree shadow in Alexandria. Since 7.2 degrees is 1/50 of a circle, Earth's circumference must be 50x the distance between cities. His answer was within 2% of correct.
