Why Your Brain Agrees
Consonance is not just a math fact on paper — it happens inside your ear and brain. When two notes sit in a simple ratio, their sound waves line up at regular, predictable intervals, and the shared overtones reinforce each other instead of clashing.
Your auditory system is a relentless pattern detector. It rewards the clean, repeating alignment of a simple ratio with a feeling of stability, and flags the irregular, beating alignment of a complex ratio as restlessness. That instinctive reaction is why a melody can feel resolved or unfinished before you could ever name the interval.

Notice the same idea wearing different costumes. Rhythm is whole-number ratios spread across time, just as harmony is whole-number ratios spread across pitch — a 3-against-4 polyrhythm is the percussion cousin of a musical interval.
The next time a song moves you, listen for the tension and release: the moment a chord pulls away from a simple ratio and the satisfying moment it settles back. You are hearing math being used as an emotional tool, whether the composer counted it out or felt it by instinct.
