Engineering Borrows from Bees

Honeycomb panels are used in aircraft, spacecraft, and race cars. Two thin sheets sandwiching a hexagonal core create a material that is incredibly light yet strong — the same principle bees discovered long before humans took flight. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner uses honeycomb composites throughout its structure.

Hexagonal grids also organize cell-tower placement, warehouse floor plans, and even semiconductor chip layouts. Whenever engineers need to cover an area with maximum efficiency and minimum waste, they reach for the hexagon.
