Three walls meeting at 120 degrees is the only stable, lowest-tension arrangement
Whenever soft walls pull tight and share corners, they meet three at a time at 120-degree angles, because any other angle leaves a net pull that keeps shifting the wall. Soap films do the same thing. Three lines at 120 degrees automatically build a hexagon, which is why the pattern appears on its own as the wax sets.
