LESSON 6 · Patterns in Nature

Nature's Blueprint

Sunflowers arrange seeds in opposing Fibonacci spirals — typically 34 in one direction and 55 in the other. Pine cones, pineapples, and artichokes follow the same pattern. Why? Because Fibonacci spacing maximizes packing efficiency, giving each seed the most room to grow.

Count the petals on flowers: lilies have 3, buttercups have 5, delphiniums have 8, marigolds have 13, daisies often have 21 or 34. These are all Fibonacci numbers. Exceptions exist, but the pattern holds far more often than chance would predict.
