The Cross Method

For two-digit multiplication, the cross method breaks the problem into manageable pieces. Take 34 times 56: multiply outers (30 times 50 = 1,500), cross-multiply (30 times 6 plus 4 times 50 = 380), multiply inners (4 times 6 = 24). Add them all: 1,904. Three simple steps replace one complex calculation.

The power of the cross method is that the three steps never change, no matter how ugly the digits get. You always do outers, the cross, then inners, so your brain runs the same routine on 34 x 56 as on 87 x 93. Speed competitors rely on this exact method because a fixed sequence leaves nothing to decide mid-problem.
