The alternating-sum test does more than catch multiples of 11 — the same logic runs quietly through everyday systems. ISBN-10 book codes use a weighted sum taken modulo 11, with the final digit chosen so the total comes out clean. Mistype one digit and the check fails, flagging the error instantly. Banks apply similar digit-checks to account numbers, catching a single slip before money moves.
