LESSON 1 · Fractions Demystified

Fractions Beyond the Kitchen

Fractions are the bedrock of almost every piece of adult math. Ratios in a chemistry lab (2 parts acid, 1 part water) are fractions. Probabilities are fractions — a 1-in-6 chance is 1/6. Musical intervals are frequency ratios: a perfect fifth is 3/2, a perfect fourth is 4/3. What your ears hear as harmony, a mathematician sees as clean small-number fractions.

The deepest link is similarity in geometry. Two triangles are similar if their sides share the same ratios — which is why a photo can be enlarged without distortion. Scale a blueprint by 1/48 and every fraction in the drawing survives. Fractions quietly enforce proportion across every domain that describes parts of wholes.
