LESSON 3 · Fractions Demystified

Whole Plus Fraction

A mixed number combines a whole number with a proper fraction: 2 and 3/4 means two full units plus three-quarters of another. You see mixed numbers everywhere — recipes call for 1 and 1/2 cups, roads are 3 and 1/4 miles long, and people report heights as 5 feet 10 and 3/4 inches.

Mixed numbers feel natural in conversation because they match how we experience quantities. You do not eat 7/4 of a pizza — you eat 1 and 3/4 pizzas. The mixed number puts the whole pieces front and center, with the leftover fraction trailing behind. This human-friendly format has been used in trade and cooking for thousands of years.
