Number Insights

Mixed numbers bridge whole numbers and fractions:

  • A mixed number is a whole number plus a proper fraction: 3 and 1/4, 7 and 1/2
  • Convert to an improper fraction: multiply whole by denominator, add numerator
  • Convert back: divide numerator by denominator — quotient is the whole, remainder is the numerator
  • Add and subtract by handling whole and fraction parts separately
  • Multiply and divide by converting to improper fractions first

Mixed numbers speak human language; improper fractions speak math language. Being fluent in both lets you move freely between everyday quantities and clean computation.
