LESSON 4 · Fractions Demystified

Why Equivalents Matter

Equivalent fractions are essential for adding and subtracting — you need a common denominator, which means converting fractions to equivalent forms with matching bottoms. Without this skill, operations like 1/3 plus 1/4 are impossible. Finding the lowest common denominator is the practical gateway to all fraction arithmetic.

In real life, equivalents help you compare deals. Is a 2-for-5 deal better than 3-for-8? Convert to equivalent fractions with the same denominator: 2/5 = 16/40 vs. 3/8 = 15/40. The 2-for-5 deal is slightly better. Equivalent fractions turn comparisons into arithmetic.
