LESSON 6 · Fractions Demystified

Why 100 Wins

Why build everything around 100? Because most people reason badly in raw fractions but easily in parts of a hundred. The word itself is Latin, per centum — per hundred — and Roman tax collectors leaned on it because hundredths made proportional taxes practical without algebra.

The wording also carries real emotional weight. Researchers Levin and Gaeth found that beef labeled "75% lean" was rated tastier and less greasy than the very same beef labeled "25% fat." Identical meat, opposite reaction — purely from how the percentage was framed.
