A subscript labels related variables so you can tell them apart
When one problem needs several quantities of the same kind, mathematicians write x₁, x₂, x₃ instead of inventing new letters. The small number is a subscript, not a multiplier. It lets a single name cover a whole family of values, which is exactly how spreadsheets number their rows.
