Straight Lines Everywhere

Real laws are rarely linear. Gravity pulls harder closer to a planet, economies grow exponentially, and neural networks are wildly nonlinear. Yet nearly every engineering calculation starts with a linear approximation — the local, straight-line version of the true curve. Zoom in close enough and almost any smooth curve looks like a line.

That is the power of linearization. Physicists treat a swinging pendulum as linear for small angles, and the math becomes easy. Machine learning's gradient descent takes one small local-linear step at a time toward the best answer. Master ax + b = c and you hold the key to every smooth problem.
