Some inputs break the rule, so they're excluded from the function's domain
The set of allowed inputs is called the domain. For f(x) = 1/x, you can't input 0, because dividing by zero has no answer. For the square root function, negative inputs are left out. Defining the domain is how a function stays honest: one valid output for every input it accepts.
