Chasing Pi's Digits

Pi's decimal expansion never ends and never repeats, so computing it has become a benchmark sport. In 2024, a team calculated pi to 105 trillion digits, a run that took 75 days on a cloud server cluster.

Yet almost none of those digits are needed. Just 40 digits of pi are enough to measure the circumference of the observable universe to within the width of a single hydrogen atom.
