LESSON 4 · Geometry Around You

The Shape of Everything

Your screen, this page, your TV, your wallet, your door — all rectangles. Rectangles dominate human-made shapes because they tile perfectly (no wasted space) and because right angles are easy to build. A carpenter with a square can produce a rectangle; a curved shape requires far more skill.

Aspect ratio is a quiet design choice. Shift a layout from a tall rectangle to a wide one and the same content can feel calm or cramped, balanced or busy. The gap between a design that reads as clean and one that reads as cluttered is often nothing more than the proportions of the rectangles inside it.
