Treating "nothing" as a thing felt like a contradiction: how can nothing also be something you count and calculate with?
A placeholder is easy to picture, but a number you can add, subtract, and reason about is a bigger leap. Many great mathematical cultures handled huge sums yet never gave nothing its own symbol, because counting things you can see felt safer than counting an absence.
