LESSON 6 · The Secret Life of Numbers

Memorizing and Celebrating

Pi Day falls on March 14, written 3/14 in the American style. People mark it with pie and digit-reciting contests.

The memory record runs past 70,000 digits. Champions do not picture numbers; they turn pi into a story, often using a code where the length of each word stands for the next digit. The mind holds a vivid tale far more easily than a wall of figures.

So why do those record-breaking digits never matter in real life? Because every real measurement is fuzzy. A machined part, a telescope reading, a survey line — each carries its own small error.

Multiply a value good to a few digits by a value good to a few digits and the answer is only as sharp as the weakest input. Beyond a handful of pi's digits, you are polishing precision the measurement already threw away.
