Because the natural log, ln, is the one logarithm whose slope is simply 1/x — no awkward constant tags along.
Take the logarithm in any other base and its derivative carries an extra messy factor. Choose base e and that factor becomes exactly 1, so ln(x) has a slope of 1/x. That clean behavior is why calculus and physics default to e rather than base 10.
