A placeholder just marks an empty column; a real zero is a number you can add, subtract, and multiply
Babylonians and others used a gap or symbol to show 'nothing here' inside a number — that is a placeholder. Treating zero as a value in its own right, with its own arithmetic, was the bigger leap and only fully clicked once the rules were written down.
