LESSON 5 · Math You Actually Use
Reading a Map Scale
A map scale is just a ratio, and it unlocks real distance fast. A 1:50,000 scale means 1 cm on paper equals 50,000 cm on the ground — that's 500 meters, or half a kilometer per centimeter. So 7 cm between two towns means 3.5 km of walking.
Flip it to plan ahead: to show a 10 km trail at 1:50,000, you need 20 cm of paper. The same ratio reads the world in both directions.

The hidden trap is waste factor: 10-15% extra for flooring cuts, 20-25% for angle cuts or patterns, almost nothing for paint if your math is right. Contractors who learn waste factors early stop losing money. Homeowners who learn them stop being surprised by the bill.
