LESSON 1 · Into the Abyss: Ocean Depths

The Unseen Planet

We have mapped more of the surface of Mars than we have of our own ocean floor at modern resolution. Seabed 2030 reported in 2025 that 27.3% of the world's ocean floor had been mapped to modern standards, leaving roughly three quarters still unmapped at that level.

The ocean covers about 71% of Earth's surface, yet we still treat much of it like background scenery.

Below the sunlit shallows lies a world of crushing darkness, freezing temperatures, and geological drama that makes dry land look boring. The deep ocean contains the tallest mountains, deepest valleys, and some of the most extreme environments anywhere in the known universe.
