LESSON 1 · Into the Abyss: Ocean Depths
Mountains Under the Sea
The longest mountain range on Earth is the global mid-ocean ridge system, a continuous chain that snakes for roughly 65,000 kilometers through every ocean basin. The Mid-Atlantic Ridge is its major Atlantic segment, stretching over 16,000 kilometers along the Atlantic floor. These ridges form where tectonic plates pull apart and magma rises to fill the gap. Iceland is one of the rare places where this ridge breaks the ocean surface.
Seamounts are underwater volcanic peaks that never reach the surface. Scientists estimate there are over 100,000 of them, most undiscovered. These submerged mountains create upwelling currents that attract dense concentrations of marine life, making them some of the richest ecosystems on the planet.
