LESSON 3 · Into the Abyss: Ocean Depths
The Mapping Mission
The biggest challenge in deep-sea science right now is simply knowing what is down there. Key technologies driving the effort include:
- Multibeam sonar — ships bounce sound waves off the seafloor and time the return to build detailed depth maps
- Satellite altimetry — satellites detect tiny variations in sea surface height caused by the gravity of underwater features
- Seabed 2030 — a global project aiming to map the entire ocean floor by 2030; its 2025 update reported 27.3% mapped to modern standards
- Deep-sea mining surveys — commercial interest in seabed minerals is funding exploration of long-ignored regions
