LESSON 4 · Into the Abyss: Ocean Depths
Monsters of the Map
Medieval mapmakers filled unknown ocean spaces with drawings of terrifying sea creatures. The phrase "Here be dragons" captured a genuine fear: sailors believed the deep ocean housed monsters capable of swallowing ships whole. These were not just fairy tales. They were working theories about a world nobody could verify.

The Norse Kraken was described as an island-sized creature that could drag entire fleets underwater. Sailors reported seeing its tentacles and mistaking its back for land. Today we know the legend likely grew from sightings of the giant squid, a deep-sea animal that can reach about 13 meters long and is almost never seen alive at the surface.
