Only two known objects actually bear that phrase โ the Hunt-Lenox Globe and the Ostrich Egg Globe, both from around 1504-1510
Despite the popular belief, 'Here Be Dragons' (in Latin: 'HC SVNT DRACONES') survives on just two known artifacts: the Hunt-Lenox Globe (c. 1510) and the closely related Ostrich Egg Globe (c. 1504), whose nearly identical engraving places the phrase above the coast of Southeast Asia. Medieval cartographers far more often illustrated unknown waters with sea monsters, mermaids, or simply left them blank.
