LESSON 5 · Into the Abyss: Ocean Depths
Ocean Technology Revolution
New tools are opening the deep ocean faster than ever. Soft robotics — machines made from flexible silicone — can gently handle fragile deep-sea creatures that rigid metal grippers would crush.
Environmental DNA sampling lets scientists identify species by filtering seawater. Every organism sheds DNA fragments, so a single sample can reveal hundreds of species without catching any of them.
Fiber-optic cables on the seafloor are also being turned into seismometers. By measuring tiny distortions in their light signals, researchers detect earthquakes and even whale movements.
