The Seismograph

A seismograph works on a simple principle: a heavy mass hung from a spring stays still while the ground moves beneath it. A pen attached to the mass traces the ground's motion on a rotating drum.

By comparing arrival times of P-waves and S-waves at three or more stations, seismologists can triangulate an earthquake's epicenter — the point on the surface directly above the rupture.
