LESSON 4 · When the Earth Shakes
The Human Side
Living in an earthquake zone is not just an engineering problem. It reshapes daily life, culture, and psychology in ways outsiders rarely appreciate:
- Earthquake kits — families in Japan and California keep emergency bags with 72 hours of water, food, and supplies, ready to grab at any moment
- Building culture — in many zones, people instinctively check exits when entering a room, a habit drilled in from childhood
- Economic cost — earthquake insurance is expensive and often inadequate; the 2011 Japan quake caused tens of billions of dollars in insured losses alone
