LESSON 5 · When the Earth Shakes

Emerging Hope

While reliable prediction may never be possible, several promising technologies are narrowing the gap between ignorance and preparedness:

  • AI and machine learning — algorithms trained on millions of seismic records can identify subtle patterns that precede some earthquakes, though accuracy remains limited
  • Slow slip monitoring — some faults experience slow, silent slippage before major quakes, and GPS networks can now detect movements as small as 1 mm
  • Fiber optic sensing — existing telecommunications cables can be repurposed as vast seismic sensor networks, dramatically increasing detection coverage.
