LESSON 5 · When the Earth Shakes
Machine Learning Predictions
AI is opening new possibilities in earthquake forecasting. Machine learning analyzes huge archives of seismic records to find patterns that are hard for human analysts to spot. In one 2023 trial in China, an AI flagged about 70% of the quakes in a test zone roughly a week ahead — but the same trial also missed a quake and raised several false alarms, so it is far from a proven method.

Aftershock Forecasting
Google's DeepMind tested an algorithm for forecasting aftershock locations, treating the crust as a stress network to spot where tension might release next. Early results looked strong, though later work showed much simpler models could match them. True prediction remains elusive, but tools like this are sharpening how we map the risk after a big quake.
