LESSON 1 · How Places Shape People
Separated by Terrain
Before planes and highways, geography was destiny. A mountain range could split a single people into two groups that, over centuries, developed different languages, customs, and political systems. The Pyrenees separated Spain from France; the Himalayas divided South Asia from Central Asia. Each barrier created distinct civilizations from common origins.

Rivers and coastlines had the opposite effect, connecting people. The Mediterranean Sea linked cultures from Egypt to Spain, creating a shared zone of trade, ideas, and conflict. The Nile connected Upper and Lower Egypt into a unified civilization.
