LESSON 1 · How Places Shape People

Climate and Personality

Climate leaves a mark on a culture's character. Societies in harsh, unpredictable climates tend to develop tighter social rules and stronger group loyalty. Stable, abundant environments tend to produce more individualistic cultures, where people can take risks without endangering the whole group.

Psychologist Michele Gelfand's research on "tight" versus "loose" cultures found that societies often threatened by disasters or scarcity develop stricter norms. Japan, Singapore, and Germany score as tight; Brazil, Spain, and New Zealand score as loose. The pattern fits the rule from the last card: more threat, more rules.
