LESSON 1 · How Places Shape People
Architecture Reflects Geography
Buildings reveal geography more clearly than any textbook. In monsoon regions, houses get steep roofs, raised floors, and covered walkways because heavy rain is the main challenge.
In the Middle East, homes face inward around courtyards, with thick walls that soak up daytime heat. Wind towers in Iran catch breezes and funnel them down, providing natural air conditioning in extreme heat.
Arctic peoples built the igloo, where packed snow works as insulation. Body heat alone can lift the inside far above the brutal cold outdoors. Every building tradition is a conversation between people and their geography.
