LESSON 2 · How Places Shape People

Mountains as Sacred Spaces

Mountains are sacred across nearly every culture. The Greeks placed their gods on Mount Olympus because its cloud-hidden summit created natural mystery, and Japanese Shinto honors many peaks as homes of specific spirits.

Even in secular societies, mountains keep their pull. National parks act as secular temples — places where people feel part of something larger than themselves. The feature that once inspired religion now inspires conservation.
