Trade Routes Spread Words

The Silk Road moved more than silk. Arabic numbers and Persian words traveled west; Greek and Latin ideas moved east. Wherever geography funnels trade into one corridor, a shared lingua franca appears — a go-between language for people whose native tongues differ. Malay became that language for sailors across Southeast Asia. Today English plays the role worldwide, helped along by Britain's old advantage as a seafaring island.
